Berneslai Homes is celebrating after Board Member Clair Wright won the award for Board Member of the Year at national awards ceremony of the National Federation of ALMOs (NFA), whose 60 member organisations oversee more than one million council owned properties across England. Barnsley Federation was also delighted that one of our members, chair of Grimethope TARA, Elsie Smith was short listed as a finalist for ‘Most Outstanding Resident’ and was presented with a certificate at the ceremony. The winners of the 2011 NFA Awards were announced at a ceremony on 12th July at the Midland Hotel, Manchester.
The 2011 NFA Awards ‘Board Member of
the Year’ category which was won by Berneslai
Homes Board Member Clair Wright celebrates inspirational ALMO board members whose
commitment has demonstrated outstanding support to their teams, residents
and the community.
Clair was
nominated for her role as Equality and Diversity Champion and her approach
in embracing the values and demonstrating them to residents, officers and
fellow board members. In accepting the award Clair said "The award is for
the whole of Berneslai Homes – upholding the values of the organisation is
what we all do, every day. It is a privilege to work with such a fantastic
ALMO."
Federation member, Elsie Smith was nominated for ‘Most Outstanding Resident’ for the difference she makes within her community, organising social activities, campaigning on behalf of her neighbours and working with Berneslai Homes to help them make changes on behalf of all residents. Elsie also won an award at Barnsley Federation's Awards Night earlier this year.
Berneslai Homes Chief Executive Helen Jaggar said: ”I’m absolutely delighted for Clair and congratulate her for winning this top award. She beat off some tough nominations from other ALMOs across the country. I would also like to congratulate Elsie for reaching the finals. Both Clair and Elsie are a true inspiration for Berneslai Homes.”
The awards were judged by an independent panel; Alison Inman, Chair of the National Federation of ALMOs; Michael Gelling, Chair of TAROE (Tenants and Residents Organisations of England), Michelle Reid, Chief Executive of TPAS and Stuart Macdonald, Editor of Inside Housing.
This has been a challenging year for the housing sector as we all try to understand the implications of a new government, changes to funding and welfare reform as well as the forthcoming abolition of both the Tenant Services Authority and the Audit Commission. Our members, their residents and staff continue to develop innovative services making their communities better places to live in.”
Designed to honour and credit the individuals and teams who do so much at ground level and beyond, the awards have been developed to recognise and celebrate the hard work and achievements of ALMOs – which together manage almost one million council homes, over half of all social housing in England.
